For those of you who do not yet follow me on Facebook, every Monday I will be bringing you a green, mean cleaning tip that will not only be environmentally friendly and chemical free, but will also save you loads of money! Our first project? Homemade laundry detergent.
First of all, can I just tell you how shocked I am I could get the ingredients here in Korea? Of course, I did have to order all of it online after searching for hours, but it's totally doable! If you are in Korea or anywhere in Asia really, I'll post the links to get what you need at the bottom of the blog. For those of you in the Western world, you will likely be able to find everything you need at the grocery store, and if not you can always go to trusty ol' Amazon.com. I'm trying not to turn green with envy as I type that sentence.
Laundry soap is ridiculously easy to make, and wonderfully inexpensive. The only tool you'll need is a food processor, and you can even get away with using a cheese grater instead if you're okay with a little more elbow grease.
To start, gather these three ingredients:
2 cups washing soda (NOT baking soda)
2 cups borax
1 4.5 oz bar of all-natural soap
I really like to use a natural soap with a little bit of scent, but I've also heard of people dropping some essential oils into their detergent. The first thing you want to do is grate your bar of soap. I used the shredding blade on my food processor to do the work for me.
Mix together your grated soap, washing soda, and borax.
I wanted a fine powder and well-mixed detergent, so I threw it in the food processor for 30 seconds and viola! I had perfect laundry detergent.
The scoop I use is from an old box of laundry detergent, but it adds up to about 3 tablespoons per load. Personally, I like to double my recipe and have a good amount that will last a while. Give it a try and let me know what you think!
