Green Clean Monday: DIY Toilet Bowl Cleaner

I have been on a mad search to somehow get internet while we are at school. While we work full time, there is sometimes a lot of desk warming involved in being an English teacher in Korea. Not that I’m complaining, but staring at a wall for an hour and a half just isn’t my thing. I’d much rather work on blog posts! Fortunately, my genius husband found a way to tether my computer to the data I get on my phone, so here I am!

I’m pretty darned excited about today’s Green Clean Monday, you guys. It’s easy to whip up in 5 minutes (less time than it takes to run to the store!). I’ve been doing a lot of posts about cleaning supplies for the kitchen and laundry, but today we are venturing to…the bathroom!

I use my citrus cleaning spray for the shower and counters, however when it comes to scrubbing our toilet bowl, I hadn’t ventured into making my own product. I’m proud to say that I whipped this cleaner up super quick and it works so well!

The baking soda and borax really helps scrub the sides of the toilet, as well as being natural cleaning agents. If you’ve ever heard of using baking soda as a tooth whitener, then you’ll understand why it’s the perfect ingredient to making your porcelain throne shine!

To start, grab these ingredients:

1 cup baking soda

1 cup borax

1 warm water

½ cup vinegar

¼ cup castile soap

30 drops of essential oils

Mix up your baking soda and borax, but please be sure to wear a mask or protect your face as you don’t want to breathe it in when the particles are being mixed. After you blend those two things, add your cup of warm water, and stir until the dry ingredients are dissolved. It will still be grainy, but that’s a good thing!

After this you can (slowly) add your vinegar and you’ll get some fun foaming action.

Stir in the castile soap, and add your essential oils. The 30 drops doesn’t have to be exact, it’s just a general idea for how much you need to add. I used orange, tangerine, and lemon for a nice subtle citrus scent.

Using a funnel, pour it into a bottle. I used a recycled toilet cleaner bottle, but you can also use condiment squeeze bottles that look like this: http://www.amazon.com/12-oz-Squeeze-Bottles-pk-Clear/dp/B000QJBNII

Squirt it around your toilet bowl, let it set for a bit, and see the yuck come right off when you scrub! Try it out!
